We've had wind at Champion Lakes before; at least we didn't get rain today! Much kudos is deserved by those who made it around the course five times but is also deserved by those who recognised their limitations and withdrew having checked things out on a lap or so before the start. And we did have one PB out there too: young Tomas on his 2-lapper! Matt Burton's 47km/h romp around the course was only a tad off Matt Illingworth's best speed around the 4-lapper. Matt-I was still there on the podium, again at a 47km/h average with Travis, riding the course for the first time, third at 46km/h. As Matt-B tweeted yesterday: the big hitters were there - look down the list! Emily McRedmond continued in the polished form she showed last week: another 40km/h ride to lead the girls home ahead of Emma Pooley who had battled the winds already just to get to the course.

So, perhaps it wasn't easy out there but there were definitely some pretty fine results achieved. It seems like the next 25km event on this course will not be a gift of a PB if the conditions are even reasonably good. Those coming back for a second ride will still have their work cut out.

Just in the lee of the trailer, somewhat protected from the wind Guido and Claudia took care of the signing-on (and the various unsignings) by riders; Steve McKiernan and Shannon Arnott had charge of the start; Tony Smith, Leon Vogels, Natalie Roberts and Nevis Brooks marshalled the various hot-spots under the direction of Jeff while Troy as usual had done the signage. They might have thought they had the easier tasks today but they did them well and we thank them.
