Early-bird series—2026 #1.

The Winter season of 2025 has ended and the countdown to the 2026 season commenced; the thirtieth Early-bird series begins here. And it's Benjamin Tomasi's BIRTHDAY; and Melbourne Cup day!

A couple of laps down and Andrew Simpson is leading the way; it's about 19° and there's an Easterly blowing; rain predicted for a bit later but humidity is low at the moment.
It's Thomas Bruins now with the best Lap 1 time, a mere 0.1sec ahead of young Campbell McDowell; both of them have ridden this course a few times. Andrew Simpson is the first across the finish line for the fifth time, followed by the Price pair, David and son Miles then birthday boy Tomasi. Larissa Roth is the first woman to complete the five laps. Campbell is outpacing Thomas, each on his final lap.
Campbell has finished and sits on top of the list. Another junior, Lily Suckling is the fastest BIP rider now. Joe Grasso, 'fresh' from riding the final edition of 'The Tour of Margaret River', has the best time on Standards at the moment. It looks like we have about a dozen DNS riders and at least one late start.
Lily is holding on to her place in the BIP lineup, followed now by Fiona Whelan. Lyndon Greeshaw took over top spot from Campbell with Tom Ford, making a return to Kings Park and on a road-bike, on third rank. Chris Glasby has displaced Joe from the lead on Standards and, unsuprisingly, Sophia Sammons has taken the lead for BIP riders. Caleb Noble, starting near the end has supplanted Lyndon at the head of list, grabs the standards crown and is the only rider to better 40km/h today; it looks like Matt B is a DNS and probably three start times will need adjusting.
Keeley Rodgers now follows Sophia in the BIP lead and there seem to be a brace or three DNFs. Unfortunately, five of the possible DNFs are BIP riders.

I have just heard: there was a crash on the course… certainly not a good thing to hear; riders stopped to assist.

Further observations have been sent through: "Great turn out for the first event of the series considering thunder and lightening were threatening when most people were getting up.
Most riders were at the start well ahead of their allocated start time and self marshalled so made things super easy for the volunteers
We had one rider crash on the uphill section close to the finish. Many thanks to everyone that showed care and concern with a number of riders forfeiting their ride to assist. Many thanks also to our first-aiders who were promptly on the spot to help out. We believe the rider is mostly ok but an ambo was called and she was taken to hospital as a precaution. Awaiting an update on her condition but should be ok."

PS: Ann is OK—'some bumps and bruises but nothing too bad', she later said.
