After today's ride a number of BIP riders have reached the 5-for-the-series target for qualifying; from here we look at the best-5 for each rider. Michelle McLintock, Steff vanA and Deb Kempe had little separating them today and the ability to eliminate their lesser performances will possibly bring them even closer together for the series. And, after next week's ride we'll do the calculation for the speed cut-offs for the three speed groups—they'll be close to those of previous years though.

Even today with its very large number of scratchings and 'no-shows', twenty-six PBs is not a bad start to the new year; it was another beautiful morning in Kings Park. And it's reassuring to see the proportion of women at each event holding nicely around the 45-50% mark. Our sole Under-18 rider today though, was Tom Alexander. In fact we've had very few junior riders this series but this course actually suits the younger, lighter and niftier rider. And Tom demonstrates this very effectively. He did have an added incentive with his mum to chase (a 45sec-mum) but he didn't catch her—Anna finished, still 10sec clear but Tom had collected a PB for his efforts and the praise of the turn marshals for his deftness. At the far end of the scale of 'turnability' are hand-cycles and it was great to see Richard Williams giving the course a test today; he coped well and may be paving the way for a return of some of the hand-cyclists to the EB series.

At the same time, Gwynn, Richard's wife was back in her role of starter-understudy being introduced to the complexities of 45sec start intervals; Lorraine instructed and Cathi Dixon was back in her usual role assembling starters to feed across the road to the start-line. On the desk we had Sasha Taylor and Althea Wong and manning the barriers were John Kempe and Hayden Long. Carolyn Equid again called numbers for our back-up timing having already assisted David in the course set-up. Thank you all and we'll see some of you again next week!

Our series award presentations this year will be at the Zamia again but on Monday 28th – the holiday-in-lieu for Oz day.
