The Easterlies have returned with a vengeance over the past week so arguably it was not going to be a day for records or PBs - but both were achieved: Matt Ilingworth predictably demolished Adrian Perry's 15 year old course-record with his usual careless ease (I discovered that not only does he not slow down for a chat when he passes you there's not much point in trying to keep him in sight: he's gone! Still, he was out of the saddle on the beginning of that climb 7.5km out from home when he caught me, so I guess he was trying… )

There might only have been a handful of PBs but those who did achieve Bests mainly did so with sizeable margins. Many riders in the record-sized field were riding the course for the first time and should expect to improve markedly when they return and, hopefully, experience milder conditions.
But it was a good fast ride out of the turn today with that breeze behind you for a while!

The Midland kids rode a new, shorter version of the course, turning at Wooroloo. This reminds us to say that we are always prepared to allow riders do shorter versions of courses if the necessary helper-manpower can be organised; courses with multiple laps are obviously never a problem but with the kids riding abbreviated versions of several more of the hillies series, others are also welcome to join them.

Many thanks today to Glenn Allen for organising the turn for his mob and timing the splits. Thanks to Chris Gaskell and Holly McClellan for looking after the turn for the 40km journey and taking the splits there. Pimmie started the field while Nicky (supervised, as always by the other MrP) looked after the timing set-up on the other side of the road. The crew at the registrations desk were Natalie Roberts, Karen Pimm while Jesse assisted until it was time for his own start in the ride. Phil Gyford looked after the roundabout and Susie looked after everybody but herself as she was one of two unlucky people today whose rides ended in grief after only a few km :(
