Race Report

Once again Matt Illingworth set the benchmarks for the morning—for the blokes and for the Standards; Steff did her part for the girls. We waited for some time for the next rider after Matt flew across the line and almost twenty minutes before the pair of Stu's (Helm and Gee) sprinted across. Stu Helm won the sprint and took over the hot-seat for Fastest Time but not Standards. StuH only had half the amount of time Matt had to relax in the FT chair (and enjoy his PB): it was about ten minutes before Michael Freiberg (with a PB time) took over and in the meantime Steff had arrived home (yes, another PB). In fact all the women were back by then and it had been Wanda keeping the seat warm until Steff took over.

The finish-flourish-of-the-day award has to go to Richard Williams who, in another sprint for the line just held off Lorraine MacLennan. Hand-cycles concede a bit of time on the hills but once back on level ground they can often crank out an impressive speed; not to mention what they can achieve on a downhill run! But Lorraine's finish was rewarded, nonetheless with a PB. The finish on this course is always good for a final flourish—as good as any criterium, speaking of which, we had a number of riders who had ridden in Northam yesterday, none of whom was complaining about having to back-up that effort less than twenty-four hours later. At least they were all smiling.

Smiling behind the desk, as she does on the bike was Sasha Taylor who brought Mark with her for another ride on this course after a break of nine years: he was 7.56km faster this time. It was similarly fitting that Rachel Thompson sent David off to a PB— Rachel was our starter today; backed up by Lorraine. Rick Churchill had asked for a later start as he was signing the course but assisted by Kim vanA, they were back in plenty of time for Rick to still have a decent warm-up despite a relatively short starting line-up. Out on the course, marshalling the corners were John Andrews, Iain MacLennan, John Ferguson and Cathi Dixon (who also set up the intermediate timing loop) and Adam Scott. John Healy coordinated the bunch of them. Thank you—a great morning's work.
