Race Report

This course is another that has the finish in just the right place—everyone finishes with a flourish and looks great. But the greatest show, a 300m out-of-the-saddle sprint, came from first-timer Constant Van Wyk. Well done, sir!
Matt Burton got on with the business quietly, another PB; in fact the first five at the pointy end were all PBs, Rob Hurst being the first of that mob to finish. Stu Murray finished with a canful of complaints about mechanical issues (like a dropped chain) but it couldn't have been all bad as he still posted a PB and it was the second largest of the morning! The first girl to finish, Steff did it with the show of power that's her hallmark but it certainly wasn't merely show because it signalled the third-best PB of the day; Darcy RIchards, who sprinted off the start line, returned the biggest, almost three minute, PB. It was Emily Mascaro, starting near the end of the field who jumped to top ranking amongst the women when she sailed across the line, dangerously close to the course record. It looks like the injuries that kept her out of the first half of the Early-bird series are probably under control now; persistent mechanical issues foiled her first attempt at a comeback down in Serpentine.

And it was very nice to see the flowing locks of Bruce Hunt back in the lineup and perhaps giving the term 'tester', as applied to TTers, a particular relevance today, riding 92-fixed on a 'Hilly'; but he was wearing shoes, not thongs as we've seen him do in times past. Welcome back, Bruce.

At the desk, to greet riders today, was Tanya Birkbeck getting her kilometers post-event, and saluting riders at the turn and bringing back intermediate times, was John Andrews. Lorraine was our starter (no surprise there); Paul Loring controlled traffic at the Chidlow roundabout and David Equid did the course set-up and pack-down with Sue Challen as our BWTM overseer (and helper, of course). Thank you all–not a large staff is needed for this course but a necessary few and it's not always easy to assemble even that number.

Rick Churchill mentioned something about a lack of wind on the course – he was on the other side of the road, heading back to the hall, and I couldn't hear him clearly But he made a similar comment before the start. Nevertheless, the finish flag did flutter occasionally.
