Race Report

Summer 2024/25 Event #2 when David Sofield will ride and, it's hoped, celebrate his 50th ATTA ride result.

It is a good field listed for this event with the Ironman 70.3 WA Asia Pacific Triathlon Championship being held next Sunday in Busselton—not surprisingly, a number of Busso-listed athletes are on this Sunday's list, riding the 80km option: Matt Burton, for example, Nick Thompson, Jamie Riddle, Jon Sammut are all registered. Els Visser, with five ATTA rides and five course records, is also listed for Busso but hasn't registered for NorthLink; that's a pity, but it's good to see there are a bunch of new faces amongst the women riding the ATTA 80. It certainly looks like the majority of the 80km riders are aiming for Busselton along with some of the 40s, perhaps.
…looking forward to seeing some good times recorded on the NorthLink PSP.

Ten minutes before the first rider is scheduled to leave the Webscorer live feed is yet to appear. It's still 'yesterday' in the US;
However, BOM says it's 24.6° in Ellenbrook, sunny with a 19km/h breeze blowing from the NE—much as we'd been led to expect! So, there should be a bit of work to do riding towards Muchea with a bit of assistance on the return? 30min into the ride and the feed appears…
Matt Burton should have reached Muchea by now and be on his first return leg.

The last of the scheduled 80km riders, Alex Joyce should be about to leave and MattB would be expected to be completing his first lap soon. His best time for the '40' is 50:40, so we probably still have a few minutes to wait; maybe ten? YES! 48:48 for his first (39.5km) leg— Matt's best yet. The time's yet to be confirmed, of course. 40km starters will be leaving for another 20min or so.

Oh, NO! – a fire on the side of the PSP (about 10km out from the start, I was told later) has stopped the race. Matt, on his second lap returned with the news. Riders are returning and no more have been started. I've just been told the race has been abandoned.

Unfortunately David Sofield didn't get his 50th ATTA ride this event. But Greg Perry, not seen for a while, was back to log #708, fortunately starting in the first half of the field
Some of the 40km riders, about half, completed the course, Jarred Anderson and Sophia Sammons posting superb times with Jarred's a course record and Constant van Wyk a PB; some (5) of the 80km riders managed the two out-and-back journeys but the majority called it quits after one; a couple of riders failed to get to the turn-around point. There was a certain amount of confusion on the PSP north of Ellenbrook, unsurprisingly. The final times as posted also have some corrections for start time errors and one rider, missing his scheduled time, rode one 40km lap anyway – so all the 80km aspirants got to ride at least 40km. Hopefully, next Sunday will be a great one for all going to Busselton!
